Irvin, now known as Romeo, is doing great. He absolutely loves his girl, Juliette. So much so that, from the moment they met, we renamed them the famous couple. They have a two-story 6’x5′ hutch in the basement that has its own thermostat. They are upstairs during the kids are home. He is behaving, not chewing on things and does pee in his litter box.
My relationship with Romeo is great. He does not nip, charge or grunt at me. We make sure that have morning and evening little bit of pellets, some fresh greens, and lots of hay that I get from the Rabbit Center. He loves being petted, especially his cheeks, nose, and between his ears. He let me pet him when I first met him. With the kids (9 and 11), he has done these actions a couple of times when I am not in the room. Not all the time, just instances. I told them that they need to be respectful (give him space when he is bonding with Juliette and approach him slower). I let them know that he is not being mean but communicating with them his displeasure with what they were doing at the time. (I have a BS in Biology including ethology/animal communication/socialization).
I took the kids to the Bunnies 101 class at the Rabbit Center last Saturday. I told the kids that they need to earn his trust more-so than Juliette and our past bunnies. They are/were more laid back and accepting. The only time that we pick him up is to take him to/from the basement. The steps in the basement are wooden and I worry about him slipping. He loves going up and down the main and bedroom floors like a pro because it is carpeted (not Berber). He was doing binkie from the 2nd day that he has been here. He feels comfortable enough to flop on his side a lot and nap. He is now coming to us for pets and treats.
Thanks so much for your work and bringing Romeo into our lives. We are looking forward to my husband meeting him in 3 weeks; he works in Afghanistan. Our Flemish “Wabbit”, was his, really. Wabbit liked being petted in the same manner that Romeo does. I will save your number in case we have any questions. I already use your website. 🙂
