We are excited to share this news with the rabbit community in Georgia. We often receive calls and emails from rabbit owners asking about low cost spay/neuter programs in the area. In the past, there were no options available. Dr Colby of the Windward Animal Hospital in Johns Creek has changed all of that!
Below is the letter he has written about his new lower cost spay/neuter program. We are thrilled he has given rabbit owners in the area this option and we hope it will lead to healthier, happier rabbits and eventually, fewer abandoned and unwanted rabbits.
On behalf of the GHRS and bunny lovers everywhere, we thank you Dr Colby!
Rabbit Care Givers:
I have been working with the Georgia House Rabbit Society (GHRS) for several years now. In working with them I have found that while there are a number of programs available for low cost canine and feline spays and neuters, there are not many options for the rabbit community.
Windward Animal Hospital (WAH), with the support of GHRS, is attempting to change that for the residents of the greater Atlanta area.
While the health and social benefits to spaying (ovariohysterectomy) and neutering (castration) rabbits are well documented, many veterinarians are not fully trained or have limited experience with rabbit health care issues and surgeries. Through much experience I believe rabbit health care is more of an art form than an exact science. Additionally pet/companion rabbits are just as important to their caregivers as dogs, birds and cats and deserve the same level of health care. The cost of a full annual evaluation, two types of internal parasite exams, pre-anesthetic medication, gas anesthesia, spay/neuter surgery, antibiotic injection and post-pain management generally ranges between $230-$280. WAH, with the support and assistance of GHRS will offer all the above at a cost of $90 for a male and $120 for a female. This is offer is good the first and third Wednesday every month.
WAH and GHRS are working together to fill a need in the rabbit community at affordable costs while maintaining a level of health care recommended to all rabbit owners. During the physical exam, if health issues are found which preclude a rabbit from being spayed/neutered, the exam cost will be $20. If treatment is recommended for a condition or illness, the owner would be responsible for any additional costs, including medications, which will be discussed before any action is taken. Please call Windward Animal Hospital to schedule an appointment as this program and dates are subject to change without notice, and feel free to call to address any concerns or questions before hand.
